Janine is one trashy tomato!
It’s plantin’ time! One of my favorite things to grow is heirloom tomatoes – especially the Cherokee Purple variety, and let’s not forget Mr. Stripey! If you knew me as a kid, you’re probably surprised by this knowledge.
Fun Janine fact: As a tot, I detested tomatoes and anything to do with them. Pizza (Panzera’s is my absolute fav pizza – hi Carlo!) dismantling was a favorite pastime of mine – I would carefully lift the cheese from a piece, smear the sauce on the box or my plate, replace the cheese and enjoy! And asking my Mom for American cheese on my spaghetti (another form of mac ‘n cheese) instead of sauce was my MO.
Growing up in a small Catholic school, we were lucky enough to have many Italian mothers cooking our daily lunch. I’m sure I exasperated ol’ Mrs. Oddi by refusing sauce on my Spanish rice and rigatoni. She thought I was nuts.
Over the years, I’ve softened towards tomatoes – I’ve even been called a tomato, and a trashy one at that, a time or two. Ketchup still has no place on my plate, but I now have a blast growing, cooking with and canning tomatoes. I’m always interested in finding more heirloom varieties – what’s your favorite tomato (trashy or not!) and recipe?! Please share by commenting below…
